The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF), a Utah-based non-profit founded in 2006, supports patients and researchers facing a rare, aggressive bile duct cancer.

In preparation for the ASCO oncology conference, CCF needed to rapidly collect insights from patients about barriers to participating in dose-finding oncology trials. The organisation faced constraints around speed, with only a few weeks available, alongside requirements to handle sensitive health data in compliance with HIPAA and other privacy regulations.

CCF selected QuestionPro’s Research Edition platform after evaluating several alternatives. The team deployed a survey using over 30 advanced branching and skip logic rules to tailor the experience to individual respondents. HIPAA and GDPR compliance, along with ISO 27001:2022 certification, addressed data security requirements. Mobile-optimised design, automated reminder tools, multilingual support, and AI-powered live dashboards were used to manage fieldwork and monitor responses in real time throughout the data collection period.

Within three weeks, CCF designed and launched the survey, generating nearly 300 responses. Over 85% of respondents completed the survey on mobile devices, and response rates reached nearly 90% among those who started. The survey found that 80% of respondents faced logistical and financial barriers to trial participation. Findings informed a peer-reviewed manuscript and influenced policy discussions at ASCO.

“Their platform helped us translate patient voices into evidence that’s shaping the future of oncology trials.” — Amy Medley, Senior Director of Operations, Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation
