Beginner Level
1 hour
How do you build an insight community that customers want to stay in and that your organisation actually uses? This free, one-hour course module shows you when a long-term research community is worth the investment, how technology and AI now make it realistic to run one in-house, and five practical steps to plan, recruit, launch and evolve a successful community.
Module 5 of the six-part Digital Qual Masterclass Series is taught by Laura Pulito, Vice President of Research at Recollective, and is free to watch on demand thanks to the support of Recollective. It’s for anyone considering a community for the first time, and for teams who already run one and want to keep members engaged and stakeholders using it.

What’s covered in Module 5
How long-term insight communities have evolved
In their early incarnations, brands typically relied on agencies and dedicated community teams, with manual tracking and reminders. Today more brands run communities in-house, technology automates much of the day-to-day management, AI makes large volumes of feedback easier to work with, and different methods can live within the same community.
What an insight community is and how to use one
Laura frames a long-term community as an ongoing sounding board: a group of people you can return to again and again to ask, explore, test, follow up and learn over time. Uses include longitudinal studies, on-demand insights, hearing unaided perspectives and screening members for deeper qual or quant.
Is a long-term community right for your organisation?
The benefits of a community, a six-step flow from business question to initial learning within 24 hours, and a checklist to help you decide whether you have the research needs, budget and commitment to sustain one.
Running a research community in-house with technology and AI
Why in-house doesn’t mean unsupported: how platforms handle segmentation, invitations, reminders, tracking and incentives, and how AI helps find themes, compare segments, spot contradictions and connect new questions to past learning.
Step 1–2: Planning, design and recruitment
Giving the community a reason to exist, designing for both researcher and member, sizing it without a “magic number”, and recruiting people who fit both the research and the commitment of an ongoing community.
Step 3–4: Content, programming and launch
Why more activity doesn’t mean more engagement, how to mix research and relationship-building activities, what to own in-house versus hand to technology or partners, and a pre-launch testing checklist with a small pilot.
Step 5: Evolving and monitoring community health
Keeping the community aligned with changing business needs, adjusting incentives, refreshing members, and tracking participation, response quality and attrition to decide whether to engage, rest, refresh or replace.
How to demonstrate the value of your community
A community only creates value if people use it. What teams need to know to use it, and what success looks like for both members and the organisation.

Frequently asked questions
Is this insight community course free? Yes. All six modules of the Digital Qual Masterclass Series are free to watch on demand, supported by Recollective.
Do I need experience of running a research community to take this module? No. The module covers the basics for people new to long-term communities, and practical tips on recruitment, engagement and community health for those who already run one. Module 4 on short-term communities is useful background but not essential.
How long is Module 5? About one hour. You can also read the full edited transcript as a downloadable PDF, along with three one-page handouts.
What is an insight community? An insight community, or long-term research community, is a group of customers or users that an organisation can return to again and again to ask, explore, test, follow up and learn over time. Its value is not one study but the ongoing relationship, which lets you answer new questions quickly without recruiting from scratch each time.
When is a long-term insight community worth it? Consider one if you want to be more consumer-centric, need quick-turn answers, keep recruiting the same target, have a hard-to-reach audience, or need to consolidate research requests across the organisation. You also need enough research needs to sustain a community and the resources to maintain it over time. Not every organisation needs one.
How many members does an insight community need? There is no magic number. Some communities work with 50 niche power users; others need thousands of members across markets and segments. Work backwards from how you’ll use it: typical study size, likely qualification and response rates, how often you’ll invite each segment, and how hard members are to replace.
How do you keep community members engaged? More activity doesn’t mean more engagement. Members stay involved when invitations are relevant, their time is respected, formats vary, they aren’t invited to everything, participation is easy, they understand why you’re asking, and you share what happened afterwards.
Is the course specific to Recollective’s platform? No. The content covers long-term communities and the technology that supports them in general, and applies regardless of which platform you use.
