Jazgul Ismailova on Nordic consumers, what AI moderation can really do, and why synthetic users are hype worth resisting.

Jazgul Ismailova, co-founder and CEO of Glimma AI, has moved from survey programming in Stockholm to client-side insights at Tele2 and Nordea, and on to building an AI-moderated research platform.

In this episode she explains what makes Nordic consumers distinctive, why single words like “lagom” can derail both quantitative scales and qualitative interpretation, how data quality in the region differs from other markets, and where AI-moderated research is genuinely useful.

She also makes the case against synthetic users and digital twins, and explains why localisation goes far beyond translating the interview itself.

Episode Highlights:

  • High income is not high spending. The same consumer buys an expensive jacket and then eats porridge for lunch. Why income predicts spending poorly, and what that does to segmentation.
  • “Lagom” and the limits of attribute scales. Everyday Swedish words whose meaning shifts with context and tone — and why quality, value and trust cannot be measured without qualitative follow-up.
  • Four out of five is not a complaint. Nordic respondents answer scales honestly, but every score carries its own private benchmark. The reason behind the number matters more than the number.
  • Data quality in a probabilistic-panel market. Two to three per cent speeders with established panels against around ten per cent for website-recruited samples — plus short open-ends and a shortage of younger men.
  • AI moderation: what it is for, and what it is not. Concept tests, drivers and barriers, UX and churn studies. Why it does not mean synthetic respondents, and why the moderator should sound like a machine.
  • Localisation goes beyond the interview. The whole interface has to work in the respondent’s language. Why Finland gets skipped, and why European clients now ask where the data is stored.
